To Improve it, Track It

Tracking your SMS campaign is crucial for measuring its success and determining the return on investment (ROI).

By examining campaign data, you can gain valuable insights that help improve your overall marketing efforts and boost conversions.

Tracking enables you to:

  • Optimize send times
  • Refine message content
  • Enhance user engagement

These improvements ultimately lead to more effective SMS campaigns and in this post, we're going to give you some essential tips to help you set up effective tracking for your SMS campaigns.

Essential Tools and Setup for SMS Tracking

UTM parameters are crucial for accurate link tracking in SMS marketing campaigns. These parameters are added to URLs and provide valuable information about the source, medium, and campaign associated with each click.

By consistently using UTM parameters in your SMS links, you can gain a clear understanding of how your audience engages with your content and which campaigns drive the most traffic.

Web analytics integration is essential for monitoring traffic sources and user behavior. Google Analytics allows you to track key metrics such as:

  • Click-through rates
  • Bounce rates
  • Conversions

Alternative analytics platforms like Adobe Analytics or Mixpanel offer similar capabilities and can seamlessly integrate with your SMS tracking efforts.

To enhance your SMS tracking, consider using dedicated Real-Time Analytics services with SMS-focused dashboards. Specialized platforms like SMS-Magic or SimpleTexting offer in-depth insights specifically tailored to SMS campaigns.

These services provide powerful features including:

  • Real-time reporting
  • Subscriber segmentation
  • A/B testing

By leveraging UTM parameters, web analytics, and SMS-specific analytics services, you'll be well-equipped to track, measure, and refine your SMS marketing efforts for optimal results.

Key SMS Metrics You Should Monitor

When it comes to assessing the performance of your SMS campaigns, there are several key metrics that you should keep a close eye on. These Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of your campaigns.

By monitoring these metrics, you can make data-driven decisions and optimize your strategies for better results.

The most important SMS metrics to monitor include:

  • Delivery rates: Percentage of messages successfully reaching recipients' devices
  • Open rates: Number of people who open and read your messages
  • Click-through rates (CTR): Proportion of recipients who click on links
  • Conversion rates: Percentage of clicks leading to desired actions
  • Opt-out rates: Number of people unsubscribing from SMS communications

Closely monitoring these metrics helps you gain a deeper understanding of how your SMS campaigns are performing and identify areas for improvement.

Low delivery rates may suggest issues with your contact list or potential spam flagging. High opt-out rates could indicate that your content is not resonating with your audience.

By analyzing these KPIs and making data-driven adjustments to your strategies, you can continuously refine your approach and maximize the impact of your SMS marketing efforts.

1) Delivery Rate

SMS delivery rate refers to the percentage of text messages that are successfully delivered to the recipient's phone.

Low delivery rates could indicate data hygiene issues or carrier blocking. This emphasizes the importance of using valid phone numbers and permission-based lists for your messaging campaigns.

2) Click-Through Rate (CTR)

Click-Through Rate reveals whether your SMS content is compelling enough to drive action.

To differentiate traffic sources, consider using link shorteners and UTM tracking.

Writing concise copy and clear calls-to-action (CTAs) can significantly boost clicks and improve your overall SMS marketing performance.

3) Conversion Rate

Tracking user actions after SMS link clicks is essential for measuring campaign success. This can be accomplished through unique URLs or UTM parameters that attribute sales and sign-ups to specific SMS campaigns.

To maximize conversion rates, focus on two key elements:

4) Opt-Out (Unsubscribe) Rate

Unsubscribe requests are a common and expected part of any SMS marketing campaign.

To minimize opt-outs, it's essential to:

  • Respect subscriber preferences
  • Maintain reasonable message frequency
  • Align content with audience expectations

Always ensure compliance with regulations like the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). This helps avoid potential penalties and maintains a positive relationship with your audience.

5) Response Rate

Two-way messaging is crucial for building brand trust and loyalty. You can track audience engagement by counting replies to your SMS campaigns.

Consider using short-code keywords to gather user feedback effectively. Simple prompts like "Reply YES to confirm" can boost engagement and strengthen customer relationships.

Use Real-Time Analytics for SMS Insights

Real-time tracking is crucial for monitoring the performance of your SMS marketing campaigns in today's fast-paced business environment. By having instant access to key metrics, you can quickly assess the effectiveness of your messages and make data-driven decisions to optimize your strategy.

Real-time analytics enable you to:

  • Identify emerging trends
  • Track customer engagement levels
  • Adjust your approach immediately
  • Ensure campaigns remain relevant and impactful

Understanding campaign performance requires analyzing several key metrics:

  • Bounce reasons
  • Deliverability rates
  • Error codes

By examining these metrics, you can pinpoint areas needing improvement and take corrective action. For instance, if you notice a high number of bounces due to invalid phone numbers, you can focus on updating your contact list to improve deliverability.

To gain deeper insights into your SMS performance, consider using specialized solutions like our Real-Time Analytics offering. These tools provide dynamic reporting capabilities that go beyond basic metrics, allowing you to:

  • Visualize data effectively
  • Track customer journeys
  • Uncover valuable patterns
  • Monitor campaigns in real-time
  • Access detailed analytics
  • Track error codes for failed messages

By leveraging these advanced features, you can make informed decisions, optimize your messaging strategies, and drive better results for your business.

Step-by-Step: Setting Up SMS Tracking with Google Analytics

Building effective tracking URLs is essential when monitoring SMS marketing campaigns through Google Analytics. This is accomplished by using UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters.

These parameters help differentiate traffic sources and analyze campaign performance. To get started, append UTM parameters to your URLs, including:

  • Campaign source (e.g., "sms")
  • Medium (e.g., "text")
  • Campaign name (e.g., "summer_sale")

Character count and trust are crucial considerations when adding URLs to SMS messages. Long, complex URLs can appear suspicious and may reduce click-through rates.

To address this challenge, use a reliable URL shortening service that creates branded short links. These shortened links save space and build trust by clearly associating with your brand. Consider services like:

Monitoring campaign performance is the final step. Navigate to the "Acquisition" section in your Google Analytics account and select "Campaigns" to view your data.

Here you'll find a comprehensive overview of your SMS campaign metrics, including:

  • Clicks
  • Bounce rates
  • Conversions

Regular data analysis is key to success. By consistently monitoring these metrics, you can make data-driven decisions to optimize future campaigns and improve your text message marketing strategy.

Avoiding Common Pitfalls

Avoid spamming your audience or sending too many messages. This behavior quickly leads to frustration and unsubscribes from your customers.

Maintaining a clean and compliant contact list is essential. This ensures you're only reaching out to those who have expressly opted-in to receive your communications.

Always provide clear opt-out instructions in your messages. This practice protects your brand's reputation and maintains a positive relationship with your subscribers.

Conclusion and Next Steps

Success in SMS marketing relies on three key elements: - Continually refining your messaging - Optimizing send frequency - Leveraging customer segmentation

Proper tracking is essential for understanding and improving these fundamentalsBy relying on solid data instead of guesswork, you can confidently guide future campaign refinements and optimizations.

When our family bought an electric cargo bike earlier this year, one of my biggest fears was that this lovely and expensive new machine was going to get stolen. So I got the best lock money could buy, and I started to investigate: did I need ebike insurance?

First, I called my homeowners insurance provider to see if they would cover the bike if it were stolen. To my surprise, because it’s an electric bike, not only did my policy not cover it, they wouldn’t even add it for an additional fee or sell me a separate policy for it, the way they did for our family car.

Instead they referred me to an insurance company that specializes in bikes and ebikes. I bought a policy from them and sleep a little better for it.

I’ve heard similar stories from other ebike owners. And I’ve heard worse.

What can happen without ebike insurance

The saddest stories are the ones where someone assumed their homeowners or renters or car insurance covered their ebike, and after it was stolen or seriously damaged, it turned out it wasn’t covered.

"And then there are the stories about people whose ebikes were covered by their homeowners policy, but their premium went way up when they made a claim for a stolen ebike."
<span class="blog-quote-name">-Kyle Miller, CEO Brass Hands</span>

Why it’s hard to insure an ebike

When it comes to insurance, ebikes land in a gray area outside standard homeowners insurance and auto insurance. Here’s why:

  • Ebikes are new in terms of the insurance industry. Most of the several million ebikes in the U.S. were purchased in the last two years. Insurers aren’t familiar with them, and insurers don’t like to be surprised by unfamiliar products.
  • Ebikes are more expensive than regular bikes. Policies that cover bikes, like most homeowners or renters policies, might have also covered ebikes until the insurer had to pay much larger claims than they expected to replace a damaged or stolen ebike. See above about insurers and surprise. So some policy terms got changed.
  • Finally, ebikes get stolen a lot, and not only from people’s homes. They are ridden and locked up outside all over the place, which makes them more vulnerable than other valuable household items.

Steps to take to properly insure your ebike

The odds that your ebike is covered by your existing insurance is lower than you may think. Here’s what to do to find out if you need ebike insurance:

  1. Call your insurance company and find out what they cover. Things to bring up: coverage of accidental damage, theft, and travel (like what would happen if you flew somewhere with your bike and the airline did a number on it). Does the insurance company consider your ebike a “luxury item”? If you’re happy with the coverage, great! You’re good to go.
  2. Consider bike-specific coverage. If you aren’t covered, or feel like the coverage you do have isn’t enough, here are some things to think about.

Bike insurance covers all kinds of bike specific things, not just theft. Think damage to the bike from a collision, medical payments if you are injured in a collision, insurance for the bike if you are traveling with it or racing it, or a bike rental while your bike is being repaired. Some policies even cover things like accessories (like bike lights and panniers) and riding clothes.

Bike claims won’t affect your other insurance premium. Should you need to make a claim on your ebike, your home insurance premium won’t change or get canceled.
