SMS marketing is a form of direct marketing that involves sending promotional messages, alerts, or notifications to customers via Short Message Service (SMS).

This method leverages text messaging to reach consumers directly on their mobile devices. SMS marketing is known for its immediacy and high engagement rates, making it a powerful tool for businesses to communicate with their audience.

Key Aspects of SMS Marketing

Along with email marketing and social media marketing, SMS marketing is one of the pillars of a business’s digital marketing strategy. Whether you’re an eCommerce brand or a small business with a brick and mortar store, SMS marketing is a great way to reach your intended recipients via a channel they’ll definitely notice.

Here are the most critical benefits of SMS marketing:

1. Direct Communication:

Personalization: SMS allows for personalized messages that can be tailored to individual customer preferences and behaviors.

Immediate Reach: Messages are delivered instantly, with the ability to reach a high number of people in real time.

2. High Engagement Rates:

Open Rates: SMS messages have significantly higher open rates compared to emails, often exceeding 90%.

Response Rates: SMS campaigns often see higher response rates due to the direct and personal nature of text messaging, increasing each campaign’s success.

3. Types of SMS Marketing Messages:

Promotional Messages: Includes special offers, discounts, and sales promotions to SMS subscribers.

Transactional Messages: Sends order confirmations, shipping updates, and appointment reminders.

Customer Service Messages: Provides support, feedback requests, and customer satisfaction surveys.

Engagement Messages: Includes reminders, event invitations, and loyalty program updates, as well as keyword opt-ins to drive list growth rate.

4. Compliance and Regulations:

Opt-In Requirements: Recipients must provide consent to receive SMS marketing messages. This is typically done through opt-in mechanisms such as keyword subscriptions.

Opt-Out Mechanisms: Provide an easy way for recipients to unsubscribe from future messages, often through a reply keyword like “STOP.”

5. Benefits of SMS Marketing:

High Reach and Visibility: SMS messages are highly visible as they appear directly on mobile screens.

Cost-Effective: Generally, SMS marketing is affordable, especially for reaching large audiences.

Versatility: Suitable for a wide range of applications, from time-sensitive offers to ongoing customer engagement to mass reaching the total number of people in your database.

6. Best Practices:

Segment Your Audience: Tailor messages to different customer segments for better relevance and engagement.

Keep Messages Concise: SMS has a character limit, so make sure your messages are clear and to the point.

Timing and Frequency: Send messages at appropriate times and avoid overwhelming recipients with too many messages.

Overall, SMS marketing is a valuable tool for businesses looking to engage with their audience directly and effectively. By leveraging its immediacy and high engagement rates, companies can drive customer action and enhance the return-on-investment in their marketing efforts.

Understanding SMS Marketing Metrics: Key Indicators for Success

SMS marketing has emerged as a potent tool for businesses aiming to engage customers directly and effectively.

With its high open rates and immediacy, SMS marketing can drive conversions, enhance customer relationships and retention, and boost overall campaign performance. However, to harness the full potential of SMS marketing, it's crucial to create a full SMS strategy and track and analyze key metrics around its performance. This article explores essential SMS marketing metrics and how they can help optimize your strategies.

1. Delivery Rate

Definition: The delivery rate measures the percentage of SMS messages successfully delivered to recipients' devices.

Why It Matters: A high delivery rate indicates that your messages are reaching your audience. A low delivery rate could signal issues with data quality or technical problems with your SMS platform.

How to Improve: Regularly clean and update your contact list to ensure the accuracy of phone numbers. Work with a reliable SMS provider that offers high delivery rates and support.

2. Open Rate

Definition: The open rate refers to the percentage of delivered messages that were opened by recipients.

Why It Matters: SMS messages typically have high open rates compared to other channels. Tracking this metric helps gauge the effectiveness of your messaging and timing.

How to Improve: Craft compelling and relevant messages with clear calls to action. Timing is crucial—send messages when your audience is most likely to engage.

3. Click-Through Rate (CTR)

Definition: The click-through rate measures the percentage of recipients who click on a link included in your SMS.

Why It Matters: CTR provides insight into how well your SMS content encourages recipients to take action. A higher CTR indicates that your message is effective in driving engagement.

How to Improve: Use clear and enticing calls to action (CTAs). Ensure that links are relevant and lead to valuable content or offers.

4. Conversion Rate

Definition: SMS conversion rate tracks the percentage of recipients who complete a desired action, such as making a purchase or signing up for a service, after receiving your SMS.

Why It Matters: This metric directly reflects the effectiveness of your SMS marketing in achieving business goals. It helps assess the ROI of your campaigns.

How to Improve: Ensure that your messages are targeted and personalized. Include strong, actionable offers and optimize the landing page experience for conversions.

5. Unsubscribe Rate

Definition: The unsubscribe rate measures the percentage of recipients who opt out of receiving future messages after receiving an SMS.

Why It Matters: A high unsubscribe rate can indicate issues with message relevance, frequency, or content quality. It’s essential for maintaining a positive brand perception.

How to Improve: Avoid overwhelming your audience with too many messages. Provide valuable content and ensure that opt-out options are clear and accessible.

6. Response Rate

Definition: The response rate tracks the percentage of recipients who reply to your SMS.

Why It Matters: This metric is particularly important for conversational SMS campaigns or customer service interactions. It helps measure engagement and customer interest.

How to Improve: Engage with your target audience by asking questions or soliciting feedback. Ensure that responses are managed promptly and effectively.

7. Bounce Rate

Definition: The bounce rate measures the percentage of messages that could not be delivered due to invalid numbers or other issues.

Why It Matters: A high bounce rate can affect your overall delivery rate and impact campaign effectiveness. It can also indicate problems with data quality.

How to Improve: Regularly clean your contact list and verify phone numbers before sending out messages. Use tools that help identify and correct invalid numbers.

8. Cost per Message

Definition: This metric calculates the cost incurred for sending each SMS message.

Why It Matters: Understanding your cost per message helps manage your budget and evaluate the cost-effectiveness of your SMS campaigns.

How to Improve: Negotiate rates with your SMS provider and look for pricing plans that offer better value for your needs. Optimize your campaigns to ensure a high ROI.

Monitoring and analyzing SMS marketing KPIs is vital for optimizing your campaigns and achieving your business objectives. By focusing on delivery rates, open rates, click-through rates, conversion rates, unsubscribe rates, response rates, bounce rates, and cost per message, you can refine your strategies, enhance engagement, and drive better results.

Continuously evaluate these metrics to adapt to your audience's preferences and ensure your SMS marketing efforts are as effective as possible.

How to Track SMS Marketing Metrics

Tracking SMS marketing metrics effectively involves leveraging tools and strategies that simplify the process and provide valuable insights. Here are some easy ways to track and analyze your SMS marketing metrics:

1. Use an SMS Marketing Platform

Most SMS marketing platforms offer built-in analytics and reporting features. These platforms can track key metrics such as delivery rates, open rates, click-through rates, and conversions.

Popular Platforms:

Textla: Offers detailed reporting on SMS performance.

SlickText: Provides comprehensive analytics and metrics tracking.

Twilio: Features robust analytics and reporting tools.

2. Set Up UTM Parameters

Adding UTM parameters to the URLs in your SMS messages allows you to track the performance of your campaigns in Google Analytics. You can see how much traffic is coming from your SMS messages and analyze user behavior on your site.

How to Implement:

Use a UTM builder tool to create custom URLs.

Add these URLs to your SMS campaigns.

Track the performance in Google Analytics under the "Campaigns" section.

3. Use Short Links

Shortened links not only make your SMS messages look cleaner but also help in tracking clicks. Services like Bitly or TinyURL provide click tracking and analytics.

How to Implement:

Create short links using a link shortening service.

Monitor click-through rates and other analytics through the service’s dashboard.

4. Monitor Delivery and Bounce Rates

Most SMS marketing platforms will show delivery and bounce rates directly in their dashboards. Regularly review these metrics to ensure your messages are reaching your audience.

How to Implement:

Check your platform’s analytics or reporting section for delivery and bounce rates.

Address any issues with invalid numbers or delivery problems.

5. Track Unsubscribes and Responses

Many SMS platforms allow you to track unsubscribes and responses. This helps gauge how well your messages are being received and if any adjustments are needed.

How to Implement:

Look for unsubscribe and response metrics in your platform’s analytics.

Use this data to refine your messaging and frequency.

6. Conduct A/B Testing

A/B testing involves sending variations of your SMS messages to different segments of your audience to see which performs better. This can help you optimize your content and strategies.

How to Implement:

Create different versions of your SMS message.

Send each version to a small portion of your audience.

Analyze which version has the best performance in terms of open rates, click-through rates, and conversions.

7. Integrate with CRM Systems

Integrating your SMS marketing platform with your CRM system can provide a more comprehensive view of how SMS fits into your overall marketing strategy. This integration can help track conversions and other key metrics related to customer interactions.

How to Implement:

Connect your SMS platform with your CRM.

Use the CRM to analyze SMS performance alongside other marketing channels.

8. Use API Reporting

If you're using an SMS gateway like Twilio or Nexmo, you can access API endpoints to retrieve detailed reports on your SMS campaigns. This can be useful for advanced tracking and integration with other data sources.

How to Implement:

Refer to the API documentation of your SMS gateway.

Set up automated reports or dashboards using the data provided.

By using these methods, you can effectively track SMS marketing metrics and make data-driven decisions to optimize your campaigns. Each approach provides valuable insights that help refine your strategy and improve overall performance.

SMS Marketing Campaign KPIs

Benchmarking SMS marketing metrics helps evaluate the effectiveness of your campaigns and set realistic goals.

While benchmarks can vary by industry and audience, here are some general guidelines for key SMS marketing metrics:

1. Delivery Rate

Benchmark: 98%–99%

Explanation: SMS messages generally have high delivery rates. A delivery rate below 98% might indicate issues with data quality or the SMS platform.

2. Open Rate

Benchmark: 90%–98%

Explanation: SMS messages usually have high open rates compared to other channels. Rates near the upper end of this range are typical, given the direct nature of SMS.

3. Click-Through Rate (CTR)

Benchmark: 2%–5%

Explanation: Click-through rates can vary based on the quality and relevance of the content. A rate higher than this indicates strong engagement and effective calls to action.

4. Conversion Rate

Benchmark: 1%–3%

Explanation: Conversion rates can vary widely depending on the industry and the specific action being measured. Rates within this range are generally considered good for SMS marketing.

5. Unsubscribe Rate

Benchmark: 0.2%–0.5%

Explanation: Low unsubscribe rates suggest that your messaging is relevant and well-received. Rates higher than this may indicate issues with message frequency or content.

6. Response Rate

Benchmark: 5%–10%

Explanation: This metric is particularly relevant for interactive campaigns or customer service. A higher response rate indicates strong engagement and interest.

7. Bounce Rate

Benchmark: 1%–2%

Explanation: A low bounce rate suggests that your contact list is clean and up-to-date. Higher bounce rates may indicate problems with data accuracy.

8. Cost per Message

Benchmark: Varies by provider and volume

Explanation: The cost per message can vary depending on your SMS provider and the volume of messages sent. It's important to negotiate rates and consider the overall ROI of your campaigns.

9. Opt-In Rate

Benchmark: 2%–5%

Explanation: This measures how effectively you’re growing your subscriber list. Higher opt-in rates suggest successful acquisition strategies.

Tips for Using Benchmarks:

Consider Industry Differences: Benchmarks can vary significantly by industry. Compare your metrics with industry-specific benchmarks when available.

Analyze Trends: Track your metrics over time to identify trends and assess improvements or declines in performance.

Set Realistic Goals: Use benchmarks as a guide but set goals based on your own historical performance and specific objectives.

Regularly reviewing these benchmarks can help you assess the effectiveness of your SMS marketing strategies and make data-driven decisions to enhance your campaigns.

When our family bought an electric cargo bike earlier this year, one of my biggest fears was that this lovely and expensive new machine was going to get stolen. So I got the best lock money could buy, and I started to investigate: did I need ebike insurance?

First, I called my homeowners insurance provider to see if they would cover the bike if it were stolen. To my surprise, because it’s an electric bike, not only did my policy not cover it, they wouldn’t even add it for an additional fee or sell me a separate policy for it, the way they did for our family car.

Instead they referred me to an insurance company that specializes in bikes and ebikes. I bought a policy from them and sleep a little better for it.

I’ve heard similar stories from other ebike owners. And I’ve heard worse.

What can happen without ebike insurance

The saddest stories are the ones where someone assumed their homeowners or renters or car insurance covered their ebike, and after it was stolen or seriously damaged, it turned out it wasn’t covered.

"And then there are the stories about people whose ebikes were covered by their homeowners policy, but their premium went way up when they made a claim for a stolen ebike."
-Kyle Miller, CEO Brass Hands

Why it’s hard to insure an ebike

When it comes to insurance, ebikes land in a gray area outside standard homeowners insurance and auto insurance. Here’s why:

 • Ebikes are new in terms of the insurance industry. Most of the several million ebikes in the U.S. were purchased in the last two years. Insurers aren’t familiar with them, and insurers don’t like to be surprised by unfamiliar products.
 • Ebikes are more expensive than regular bikes. Policies that cover bikes, like most homeowners or renters policies, might have also covered ebikes until the insurer had to pay much larger claims than they expected to replace a damaged or stolen ebike. See above about insurers and surprise. So some policy terms got changed.
 • Finally, ebikes get stolen a lot, and not only from people’s homes. They are ridden and locked up outside all over the place, which makes them more vulnerable than other valuable household items.

Steps to take to properly insure your ebike

The odds that your ebike is covered by your existing insurance is lower than you may think. Here’s what to do to find out if you need ebike insurance:

 1. Call your insurance company and find out what they cover. Things to bring up: coverage of accidental damage, theft, and travel (like what would happen if you flew somewhere with your bike and the airline did a number on it). Does the insurance company consider your ebike a “luxury item”? If you’re happy with the coverage, great! You’re good to go.
 2. Consider bike-specific coverage. If you aren’t covered, or feel like the coverage you do have isn’t enough, here are some things to think about.

Bike insurance covers all kinds of bike specific things, not just theft. Think damage to the bike from a collision, medical payments if you are injured in a collision, insurance for the bike if you are traveling with it or racing it, or a bike rental while your bike is being repaired. Some policies even cover things like accessories (like bike lights and panniers) and riding clothes.

Bike claims won’t affect your other insurance premium. Should you need to make a claim on your ebike, your home insurance premium won’t change or get canceled.
