SMS marketing can be a powerful tool for churches to connect with their congregations, disseminate important information, and foster a sense of community. Here’s a guide to implementing an effective SMS marketing strategy for your church.

How so? For starters, SMS marketing offers a direct and personal way for churches to communicate with your congregation. When used responsibly and effectively, it can significantly enhance community engagement and keep your church members informed and connected.

What is SMS Marketing?

SMS (Short Message Service) marketing is a direct and effective communication method that allows you to send text messages to members of your congregation. All you need is their phone number and a text messaging service to make bulk text messaging a core communication channel for your church contact list.

Here's a breakdown of why and how mass text messaging could be beneficial for your church community:

Immediate and Personal Connection

SMS messages are delivered instantly to recipients' mobile phones. This immediacy ensures that your messages, whether they be reminders, inspirational quotes, or urgent updates, are read almost as soon as they are sent. Text messages typically have a higher open rate compared to emails, making them a very effective way of communication.

Wide Reach

Nearly everyone has a mobile phone capable of receiving SMS messages. This ubiquity makes SMS a great tool to reach a broad spectrum of your congregation, regardless of their age or tech-savvy.

Simple and Accessible

Sending and receiving text messages does not require a high level of technological skill, making it accessible to virtually every demographic, including those who may not use social media or have access to email regularly.

Cost-Effective Pricing

Compared to printed materials or media advertisements, SMS marketing can be more cost-effective. Many platforms offer plans that scale with your usage, so you pay for what you need without excessive overhead.

Engagement and Feedback

SMS allows not only for one-way communication but also for two-way interactions. Members can reply to your messages, whether to RSVP for an event, submit a prayer request, or give feedback on church activities. This interaction enhances engagement and builds community.

Segmentation and Personalization

Modern SMS platforms enable you to segment your audience into different groups based on their interests, demographic data, or engagement history. For example, you can send different messages to new visitors, regular members, or ministry volunteers. Personalization helps in making the communication more relevant and effective.

Regulation Compliant

SMS marketing requires you to obtain consent from your members before you can start sending messages. This ensures that your communication respects privacy and complies with regulations like the TCPA (Telephone Consumer Protection Act) in the U.S. or similar laws in other countries.

How to Add SMS Marketing Campaigns to Your Church Communication

Getting started with text message marketing is easy.

Church leaders can use a church texting service to quickly start mass texting their congregation with notifications, volunteer opportunities, daily devotionals, service follow-ups and more.

By adopting SMS marketing, your church can enhance the way it communicates with the congregation, ensuring that every message you send contributes to building a stronger and more connected community.

Best Practices for Sending Text Messages

SMS is a powerful addition to any church marketing, outreach, and communication strategy provided you follow these best practices.

1. Understand the Regulations

Before starting your SMS campaign, understand the legal requirements and best practices. In many countries, consent is crucial. Members must opt-in to receive messages. Always provide an easy option for recipients to opt-out.

2. Choose the Right Church SMS Platform

Select an SMS marketing platform that suits your church’s needs. Consider factors such as ease of use, cost, features like scheduling and automation, and integration with other tools you might be using, such as church management software.

3. Build Your Subscriber List

Start by inviting your congregation to join your messaging list. This can be done during services, through your church’s website, or via social media platforms. Make sure to communicate the benefits, such as receiving timely updates about church events and important announcements. Use sign-up sheets, digital forms, or verbal agreements during services to build your list of contacts who have opted in.

4. Segment Your Audience

Not all messages are relevant to every member. Use segmentation to tailor your communications based on demographics, participation in church activities, or membership duration. For example, you might send different messages to new visitors, youth group members, or volunteer teams.

5. Craft Your Messages

Decide what types of messages you will send (e.g., daily inspirations, event reminders, urgent updates). Effective SMS messages are clear, concise, and action-oriented. Keep your messages short (usually 160 characters) and direct. Start with the most important information, and always make sure your content aligns with your church’s tone and message.

6. Timing and Frequency

Be mindful of when and how often you send messages. Too frequent messages can annoy your audience, while infrequent messages might make them feel out of the loop. Establish a regular schedule and stick to it, while also being mindful of appropriate times during the day to send messages. Use the scheduling features of your platform to send messages at optimal times.

7. Engage Your Audience

Encourage interaction by asking questions or requesting feedback. SMS can be a two-way communication tool. For instance, you could ask for prayer requests or opinions on church services. This can make your congregation feel more involved and valued.

8. Track and Optimize

Monitor how effective your SMS campaigns are. Most SMS platforms provide analytics on delivery rates, open rates, and click-through rates. Use this data to tweak your messages, timing, and segmentation to better meet the needs of your congregation.

9. Maintain Privacy and Respect

Always respect the privacy of your church members. Handle all personal information with care, ensuring that it is secure and used only for the purposes communicated to your subscribers.

10. Continuous Improvement

Like any communication tool, SMS marketing should evolve. Keep an eye on how your messages perform and regularly seek feedback from your congregation on how they feel about the messages they receive and adjust your strategy accordingly.

Church Use Cases for Mass Texting

SMS marketing can be a versatile and dynamic tool for churches, offering many creative ways to engage the congregation and strengthen community bonds. Here are some innovative ways churches can use SMS marketing:

1. Daily Inspirations and Bible Verses

Send out daily or weekly inspirational messages or Bible verses to help members start their day with a positive and thoughtful message. This can be particularly comforting and can help keep the spiritual life of the congregation active throughout the week.

2. Prayer Requests and Sharing

Create a prayer chain through SMS where members can submit their prayer requests and receive prayers from others. This not only fosters a sense of community but also makes members feel supported during tough times.

3. Event Reminders

Use SMS to remind your congregation about upcoming church events, services, small groups, and meetings. This can increase attendance and participation. Include essential details like date, time, and location to make it easier for new members to plan.

4. Emergency Alerts

In case of emergencies or last-minute changes, SMS can be an effective way to quickly communicate with the entire congregation. For example, service cancellations due to weather conditions, or urgent prayer requests can be communicated instantly.

5. Volunteer Coordination

SMS can be an effective tool for coordinating volunteers for church-related activities and upcoming events. Quick messages can be sent out to summon volunteers for unplanned events or to fill in last-minute cancellations. This can especially come in handy for major services such as Easter, where you might be group texting hundreds of volunteers and reaching them via mobile device will allow for a higher response rate.

6. Bible Study Invitations

Encourage members to join Bible study groups by sending them invitations and reminders via SMS. You can include a brief overview of the study topic to pique their interest.

7. Feedback and Surveys

After events, services, or sermons, use SMS to collect feedback from your members. This can be done through simple survey links sent via text, helping you gather insights on what the congregation thinks and feels.

8. Donation Drives

SMS can be a powerful tool to encourage donations for specific causes or ongoing church needs. Provide a direct link in the message where they can easily make their contributions online.

9. Birthday and Anniversary Wishes

Make your congregation feel special by sending personalized birthday or anniversary wishes. This personal touch can greatly enhance the relationship between the church and its members.

10. Interactive Quizzes and Bible Trivia

Engage your congregation with fun and interactive SMS-based quizzes or Bible trivia. This can be a playful way to encourage learning and participation among members, especially the youth.

11. Live Polling During Services

For churches conducting services where audience input can be integrated, live SMS polling can be an engaging way to gather congregation opinions in real-time, for example, choosing the next hymn or topic for discussion.

These creative uses of SMS marketing can help deepen the connection between the church and its members, ensuring that the church remains a relevant and integral part of their daily lives.

When our family bought an electric cargo bike earlier this year, one of my biggest fears was that this lovely and expensive new machine was going to get stolen. So I got the best lock money could buy, and I started to investigate: did I need ebike insurance?

First, I called my homeowners insurance provider to see if they would cover the bike if it were stolen. To my surprise, because it’s an electric bike, not only did my policy not cover it, they wouldn’t even add it for an additional fee or sell me a separate policy for it, the way they did for our family car.

Instead they referred me to an insurance company that specializes in bikes and ebikes. I bought a policy from them and sleep a little better for it.

I’ve heard similar stories from other ebike owners. And I’ve heard worse.

What can happen without ebike insurance

The saddest stories are the ones where someone assumed their homeowners or renters or car insurance covered their ebike, and after it was stolen or seriously damaged, it turned out it wasn’t covered.

"And then there are the stories about people whose ebikes were covered by their homeowners policy, but their premium went way up when they made a claim for a stolen ebike."
-Kyle Miller, CEO Brass Hands

Why it’s hard to insure an ebike

When it comes to insurance, ebikes land in a gray area outside standard homeowners insurance and auto insurance. Here’s why:

 • Ebikes are new in terms of the insurance industry. Most of the several million ebikes in the U.S. were purchased in the last two years. Insurers aren’t familiar with them, and insurers don’t like to be surprised by unfamiliar products.
 • Ebikes are more expensive than regular bikes. Policies that cover bikes, like most homeowners or renters policies, might have also covered ebikes until the insurer had to pay much larger claims than they expected to replace a damaged or stolen ebike. See above about insurers and surprise. So some policy terms got changed.
 • Finally, ebikes get stolen a lot, and not only from people’s homes. They are ridden and locked up outside all over the place, which makes them more vulnerable than other valuable household items.

Steps to take to properly insure your ebike

The odds that your ebike is covered by your existing insurance is lower than you may think. Here’s what to do to find out if you need ebike insurance:

 1. Call your insurance company and find out what they cover. Things to bring up: coverage of accidental damage, theft, and travel (like what would happen if you flew somewhere with your bike and the airline did a number on it). Does the insurance company consider your ebike a “luxury item”? If you’re happy with the coverage, great! You’re good to go.
 2. Consider bike-specific coverage. If you aren’t covered, or feel like the coverage you do have isn’t enough, here are some things to think about.

Bike insurance covers all kinds of bike specific things, not just theft. Think damage to the bike from a collision, medical payments if you are injured in a collision, insurance for the bike if you are traveling with it or racing it, or a bike rental while your bike is being repaired. Some policies even cover things like accessories (like bike lights and panniers) and riding clothes.

Bike claims won’t affect your other insurance premium. Should you need to make a claim on your ebike, your home insurance premium won’t change or get canceled.
