SMS marketing, or text message marketing, is a potent strategy for car dealerships to engage customers, drive sales, and enhance service retention. Here's a comprehensive analysis of how SMS marketing can be leveraged by car dealerships, including strategies, benefits, challenges, and compliance considerations.

What is SMS Marketing?

SMS marketing is a method of communicating promotional messages, reminders, and updates directly to your customers’ mobile phones via text messages. It uses short, immediate, and highly readable messages to engage customers and drive action.

Why Use SMS Marketing in Car Dealerships?

For a car dealership, SMS marketing is not just about selling cars but also about enhancing customer service and building long-term relationships.

It’s a powerful, direct, and personal way to communicate with your customers, keep them informed, and respond quickly to their needs. Implementing it thoughtfully can lead to increased customer satisfaction and loyalty, and ultimately, drive more sales and services to your dealership.

High Engagement Rates: Text messages have an open rate of around 98%, far higher than emails. Most messages are read within minutes of receipt, ensuring your communications are seen almost instantly.

Immediate Communication: Text messages are typically read within minutes of receipt, making SMS an excellent tool for time-sensitive communication such as limited-time offers or important updates.

Personalization: Dealerships can send personalized messages based on customer data like purchase history and service preferences, which enhances the customer experience and increases engagement. SMS allows you to reach your customers directly, bypassing clutter like spam filters. You can personalize messages based on customer data, such as recent purchases, service history, and personal preferences, which can make your communications feel more tailored and engaging.

Cost-Effective: Compared to traditional advertising mediums like TV or print ads, SMS marketing is relatively low-cost and offers a higher return on investment.

Feedback Collection: SMS can be used to gather customer feedback quickly through surveys, which are crucial for improving services and customer satisfaction.

Efficiency and Convenience: Sending out mass texts or individual messages can be done at the touch of a button, allowing you to quickly fill last-minute openings in service appointments or push out a promotion when you have excess inventory.

How to Implement SMS Marketing in Your Car Dealership

SMS marketing offers a direct and effective way for car dealerships to connect with customers, promote sales, and build long-term relationships. By carefully crafting messages, respecting customer preferences and legal boundaries, and utilizing robust SMS marketing tools, dealerships can significantly enhance their marketing efficiency and customer engagement.

1. Collect Phone Numbers: Start by building a list of customer phone numbers. It’s crucial to get their permission to send marketing texts, which not only respects customer privacy but also complies with legal requirements.

2. Segment Your Audience: Not every message is suitable for every customer. Segment your list based on factors like purchase history, car model, and service needs. This allows you to tailor your messages to specific groups, increasing relevance and effectiveness.

3. Create Engaging Content: Since SMS limits you to 160 characters, your messages need to be concise and to the point. Whether it’s a promotion, a reminder for a service appointment, or a thank you message after a visit, make sure it’s clear and includes a call to action.

4. Timing is Key: Send messages at appropriate times. For instance, service reminders should be timed a few days before the due date, and promotional offers should be sent at times when customers are more likely to be considering a purchase, such as during holidays or sales seasons.

5. Measure and Adjust: Track the effectiveness of your SMS campaigns by monitoring metrics like response rates, the number of appointments made, and sales generated from each text. Use this data to refine your approach.

Strategies for Effective SMS Marketing

Some of the FAQs about launching effective SMS marketing strategies:

1. Promotions and Deals: Send exclusive offers and promotions to encourage customers to visit the dealership or book a service appointment.

2. Service Reminders: Automated texts for service reminders can help increase the frequency of visits and maintain customer vehicles in optimal condition.

3. Event Notifications: Inform customers about upcoming sales events, new model arrivals, or special dealership events to boost foot traffic.

4. Inventory Updates: Notify interested customers about new vehicles in stock, especially those who have expressed interest in specific models or features.

5. Loyalty Programs: Integrate SMS into loyalty programs to reward repeat customers with special offers and incentives.

It’s also worth noting that SMS marketing works best when integrated with email marketing, social media, and other channels.

SMS Marketing Challenges and Solutions

Car dealers should be thoughtful about launching an SMS marketing strategy for their auto dealership.

Maintaining contact lists and instructing team members on the best way to use text message marketing to say, empower your service department to remind a customers that they are a due for an oil change requires forethought and ongoing oversight of your SMS marketing workflows.

Here are some key challenges you should proactively address when building your SMS strategy.

1. Message Overload: Bombarding customers with too many messages can lead to opt-outs. It’s crucial to maintain a balanced communication frequency.

2. Personalization Errors: Ensure data accuracy to avoid mistakes in personalization that can irritate customers and damage trust.

3. Limited Content Space: SMS restricts messages to 160 characters. Crafting concise yet effective messages is key to maintaining engagement without oversimplifying the content.

The faster you tackle these issues, the better you’ll be at effectively using text message marketing to augment your showroom sales strategy, follow up with qualified leads, and send real-time notifications about new deals to your customers.

Compliance Considerations for Car Dealerships

Whether you’re using SMS marketing as a lead generation tool for new car buyers, getting potential customers to opt-in to your marketing campaigns, or empowering the salespeople on your sales team to say hello to potential buyers via a means other than a phone call, you need to ensure that you’re staying compliant with laws governing SMS marketing.

Here are three compliance regulations to be aware of below:

1. Consent: Dealerships must obtain explicit consent from customers before sending marketing texts. This is mandated by regulations like TCPA (Telephone Consumer Protection Act) in the U.S.

2. Opt-Out Options: Every SMS must include an easy option for recipients to opt out of future messages, such as texting "STOP."

3. Data Protection: Dealerships need to safeguard customer data used for SMS marketing to comply with privacy laws like GDPR for European customers.

Measuring SMS Marketing Success

Key metrics to monitor to track the success of car dealership texts include:

Delivery Rates: How many messages were successfully delivered.

Open Rates: How many messages were opened by recipients.

Click-through Rates: For SMS containing links, how many resulted in clicks.

Conversion Rates: How many actions (like service bookings or test drives) were taken as a result of the SMS.

When our family bought an electric cargo bike earlier this year, one of my biggest fears was that this lovely and expensive new machine was going to get stolen. So I got the best lock money could buy, and I started to investigate: did I need ebike insurance?

First, I called my homeowners insurance provider to see if they would cover the bike if it were stolen. To my surprise, because it’s an electric bike, not only did my policy not cover it, they wouldn’t even add it for an additional fee or sell me a separate policy for it, the way they did for our family car.

Instead they referred me to an insurance company that specializes in bikes and ebikes. I bought a policy from them and sleep a little better for it.

I’ve heard similar stories from other ebike owners. And I’ve heard worse.

What can happen without ebike insurance

The saddest stories are the ones where someone assumed their homeowners or renters or car insurance covered their ebike, and after it was stolen or seriously damaged, it turned out it wasn’t covered.

"And then there are the stories about people whose ebikes were covered by their homeowners policy, but their premium went way up when they made a claim for a stolen ebike."
-Kyle Miller, CEO Brass Hands

Why it’s hard to insure an ebike

When it comes to insurance, ebikes land in a gray area outside standard homeowners insurance and auto insurance. Here’s why:

 • Ebikes are new in terms of the insurance industry. Most of the several million ebikes in the U.S. were purchased in the last two years. Insurers aren’t familiar with them, and insurers don’t like to be surprised by unfamiliar products.
 • Ebikes are more expensive than regular bikes. Policies that cover bikes, like most homeowners or renters policies, might have also covered ebikes until the insurer had to pay much larger claims than they expected to replace a damaged or stolen ebike. See above about insurers and surprise. So some policy terms got changed.
 • Finally, ebikes get stolen a lot, and not only from people’s homes. They are ridden and locked up outside all over the place, which makes them more vulnerable than other valuable household items.

Steps to take to properly insure your ebike

The odds that your ebike is covered by your existing insurance is lower than you may think. Here’s what to do to find out if you need ebike insurance:

 1. Call your insurance company and find out what they cover. Things to bring up: coverage of accidental damage, theft, and travel (like what would happen if you flew somewhere with your bike and the airline did a number on it). Does the insurance company consider your ebike a “luxury item”? If you’re happy with the coverage, great! You’re good to go.
 2. Consider bike-specific coverage. If you aren’t covered, or feel like the coverage you do have isn’t enough, here are some things to think about.

Bike insurance covers all kinds of bike specific things, not just theft. Think damage to the bike from a collision, medical payments if you are injured in a collision, insurance for the bike if you are traveling with it or racing it, or a bike rental while your bike is being repaired. Some policies even cover things like accessories (like bike lights and panniers) and riding clothes.

Bike claims won’t affect your other insurance premium. Should you need to make a claim on your ebike, your home insurance premium won’t change or get canceled.
