Understanding the Power of SMS Engagement

One of the key strengths of SMS marketing lies in its personal and conversational nature. Text messages feel more intimate and direct than emails or social media posts, fostering a sense of trust and connection between your brand and your customers.

By crafting thoughtful, personalized messages, you can increase brand loyalty and build stronger relationships. Customers appreciate the one-on-one attention and are more likely to engage with brands that prioritize this level of communication.

SMS marketing reaches audiences who may not regularly check their email or social media accounts. Many people keep their phones close at hand throughout the day, making text messages an effective way to ensure your message is seen.

This is particularly valuable for reaching younger demographics who have grown up with texting as a primary form of communication. By incorporating SMS marketing into your overall strategy, you can expand your reach and connect with a wider range of potential customers.

Key Elements of an Effective SMS Engagement Strategy

Consent is a crucial aspect of any SMS engagement strategy. It's essential to obtain explicit opt-in from users before sending them any messages. This not only ensures compliance with regulations but also helps build trust with your audience.

To effectively obtain consent:

 • Make the opt-in process clear and easy
 • Provide value in exchange for permission
 • Offer exclusive deals or personalized content

Timing plays a critical role in a successful SMS strategy. Sending messages at the right moment can capture attention without annoying users.

Consider your audience's preferences and behaviors when determining the best times to send messages. For example, sending a reminder just before an event or a timely update on a purchase can be highly effective.

Be mindful of sending messages too frequently or at inappropriate times, such as late at night or during busy work hours.

Personalization is a powerful tool in SMS engagement. By tailoring content using customer data and segmentation, you can create more relevant and engaging messages.

Leverage the information you have about your customers, such as their preferences, purchase history, or location, to craft targeted messages that resonate with them.

Segmenting your audience based on shared characteristics allows you to send more specific and effective communications, ultimately leading to higher engagement and conversions.

Top 5 SMS Engagement Strategies

SMS marketing engagement can be challenging for many businesses. However, implementing the right strategies helps overcome common hurdles.

The following five strategies address key marketing challenges and work even better when combined for maximum impact.

By leveraging these proven techniques, businesses can:

 • Boost customer engagement
 • Drive conversions
 • Cultivate lasting relationships with SMS subscribers

1. Personalized Promotions and Offers

Personalized SMS offers have proven to be a game-changer for brands looking to boost their revenue. By leveraging customer data and segmentation, businesses can craft deals that feel tailor-made for each recipient.

Attentive's Prime Day strategy showcases the power of personalization. Brands using their platform saw a 13% increase in revenue during the event through behavior-based messages and timely deal announcements.

Key elements for successful SMS offers:

 • Concise, compelling copy
 • Strong calls-to-action (CTAs)
 • Exclusive promo codes for tracking
 • Targeted automation based on customer behavior

Big-box merchants like Domino's, Sephora, and Uber have mastered this approach by using customer data to automate campaigns based on actions or loyalty status.

Long-term benefits extend beyond immediate sales. These personalized offers keep your brand top of mind and encourage repeat purchases, building lasting customer relationships.

The ROI speaks for itself: SMS marketing generates $21-$41 for every dollar spent, making it a smart investment for businesses focused on revenue growth and customer engagement.

2. Cart Abandonment Reminders

Automated SMS reminders can be a powerful tool to reduce cart abandonment rates and nudge customers towards completing their purchases. By sending personalized messages that include specific details about the items left in the cart, businesses can effectively catch customers' attention and encourage them to return to their abandoned carts.

Studies show that cart abandonment rates vary across industries, with some sectors like luxury and jewelry experiencing rates above 80%. However, implementing automated workflows, including SMS reminders, can lead to a significant increase in conversion rates, with B2C businesses seeing up to a 50% improvement.

Timing and personalization are crucial factors in SMS reminder success. Sending reminders too quickly or too frequently can be counterproductive. SMS is a direct and personal channel that requires judicious use to maintain effectiveness.

To create compelling SMS reminders:

 • Include specific details about abandoned cart items
 • Create a sense of urgency
 • Make messages feel relevant to individual customers
 • Provide an easy opt-out option

While retargeting ads can bring back up to 26% of cart abandoners, SMS reminders offer a more direct and immediate approach to re-engaging customers. By reaching out shortly after cart abandonment, businesses can capitalize on customers' initial interest and encourage purchase completion.

3. Time-Sensitive Event Notifications

Flash sales and seasonal campaigns are powerful drivers of customer engagement through SMS marketing. Brands like Outdoorsy and Oh Beauty have successfully used text messaging to announce exclusive discounts to subscribers.

By creating a sense of urgency and using easy-to-remember redemption codes, these campaigns encourage customers to take immediate action on limited-time offers.

Timely reminders are crucial for boosting event attendance and conversions. A multi-channel marketing approach strengthens campaign effectiveness. Here's how to maximize impact:

 • Reinforce offers across multiple platforms
 • Use SMS as a final reminder for immediate action
 • Maintain consistent messaging across channels

Beachwaver demonstrated this strategy effectively by combining email and SMS marketing for their 50% off sale. The SMS served as a final reminder, driving immediate sales while ensuring customers received the message through multiple touchpoints.

4. Conversational Customer Support

Two-way SMS communication for customer service can dramatically improve support speed and convenience. SMS messages are typically read within 3 minutes of receipt, while emails often take around 90 minutes or more to be viewed.

The urgency and promptness of SMS enables businesses to provide real-time responses, building customer trust through quick issue resolution.

Automation through chatbots can streamline support by handling common FAQs immediately. However, it's essential to maintain a clear path for customers to reach human representatives when needed.

Creating an effective support system requires combining the strengths of both SMS and email:

When these channels are integrated seamlessly, businesses can deliver a more efficient and satisfactory customer support experience.

5. Loyalty and Rewards Programs via SMS

Drive ongoing engagement with your customers by updating them on their loyalty points, tiers, or exclusive perks via SMS.

Consider the success of Frost Buddy, which partnered with Postscript to develop a relationship-focused SMS strategy. Their impressive results include:

 • Over 100% ROI for most merchants

 • Drive better campaign results

Customer feedback is another essential measurement tool. Conducting satisfaction surveys and implementing feedback loops provide valuable insights for improving your messaging strategies.

When our family bought an electric cargo bike earlier this year, one of my biggest fears was that this lovely and expensive new machine was going to get stolen. So I got the best lock money could buy, and I started to investigate: did I need ebike insurance?

First, I called my homeowners insurance provider to see if they would cover the bike if it were stolen. To my surprise, because it’s an electric bike, not only did my policy not cover it, they wouldn’t even add it for an additional fee or sell me a separate policy for it, the way they did for our family car.

Instead they referred me to an insurance company that specializes in bikes and ebikes. I bought a policy from them and sleep a little better for it.

I’ve heard similar stories from other ebike owners. And I’ve heard worse.

What can happen without ebike insurance

The saddest stories are the ones where someone assumed their homeowners or renters or car insurance covered their ebike, and after it was stolen or seriously damaged, it turned out it wasn’t covered.

"And then there are the stories about people whose ebikes were covered by their homeowners policy, but their premium went way up when they made a claim for a stolen ebike."
-Kyle Miller, CEO Brass Hands

Why it’s hard to insure an ebike

When it comes to insurance, ebikes land in a gray area outside standard homeowners insurance and auto insurance. Here’s why:

 • Ebikes are new in terms of the insurance industry. Most of the several million ebikes in the U.S. were purchased in the last two years. Insurers aren’t familiar with them, and insurers don’t like to be surprised by unfamiliar products.
 • Ebikes are more expensive than regular bikes. Policies that cover bikes, like most homeowners or renters policies, might have also covered ebikes until the insurer had to pay much larger claims than they expected to replace a damaged or stolen ebike. See above about insurers and surprise. So some policy terms got changed.
 • Finally, ebikes get stolen a lot, and not only from people’s homes. They are ridden and locked up outside all over the place, which makes them more vulnerable than other valuable household items.

Steps to take to properly insure your ebike

The odds that your ebike is covered by your existing insurance is lower than you may think. Here’s what to do to find out if you need ebike insurance:

 1. Call your insurance company and find out what they cover. Things to bring up: coverage of accidental damage, theft, and travel (like what would happen if you flew somewhere with your bike and the airline did a number on it). Does the insurance company consider your ebike a “luxury item”? If you’re happy with the coverage, great! You’re good to go.
 2. Consider bike-specific coverage. If you aren’t covered, or feel like the coverage you do have isn’t enough, here are some things to think about.

Bike insurance covers all kinds of bike specific things, not just theft. Think damage to the bike from a collision, medical payments if you are injured in a collision, insurance for the bike if you are traveling with it or racing it, or a bike rental while your bike is being repaired. Some policies even cover things like accessories (like bike lights and panniers) and riding clothes.

Bike claims won’t affect your other insurance premium. Should you need to make a claim on your ebike, your home insurance premium won’t change or get canceled.
