1. High Deliverability: Ensuring messages reach recipients without delays or failures is critical. Look for platforms known for high deliverability rates for bulk SMS marketing campaigns.

2. Message Scheduling: This feature allows you to plan and schedule messages to be sent at specific times, which is particularly useful for targeting users in different time zones or for time-sensitive messages.

3. Personalization: The ability to personalize messages with the recipient's name or other personal information can significantly increase engagement and response rates.

4. Segmentation: Segmenting your contact list based on various criteria such as demographics, past behavior, or engagement level helps in sending targeted messages that are more likely to be relevant and effective.

5. Automated Responses: Automation tools enable you to set up auto-replies or trigger-based messages, which can help maintain engagement and provide immediate responses to recipient actions.

6. Analytics and Reporting: Detailed analytics and reports help track the success of your SMS campaigns, providing insights into delivery rates, open rates, and engagement metrics. This data is crucial for optimizing future campaigns.

7. Integration Capabilities: Integration with other tools and systems (like CRM software, marketing automation, and customer service platforms) can streamline processes and create more cohesive communication strategies.

8. Opt-out Management: Compliance with regulations often requires that recipients have the ability to easily opt-out of receiving messages. Good SMS platforms should automate this process and update your contact lists accordingly.

9. Multi-language Support: The ability to send messages in different languages can be essential for businesses operating in or targeting multiple countries.

10. API Access: For businesses that need more customization, access to an API allows for the development of custom solutions and integration into existing systems and workflows.

11. User-Friendly Interface: The platform should be easy to use, with a clean interface that allows quick access to all features without a steep learning curve.

12. Reliable Customer Support: Efficient and accessible customer support is crucial, especially when dealing with large volumes of critical communications.

These features not only contribute to the effectiveness of your SMS campaigns but also enhance the overall user experience, ensuring that your messaging efforts are as successful and hassle-free as possible.

Choosing the Right Bulk SMS Sender for Your Business

Choosing the right bulk SMS sender for your business or organization involves several considerations to ensure that the service aligns with your communication goals and budget. Here are some key factors to consider when selecting a bulk SMS provider:

1. Reliability and Delivery Rates: The most crucial factor is the provider's ability to deliver messages successfully to all recipients. Look for providers with high delivery rates and robust infrastructure to ensure messages reach their destinations without delays or failures.

2. Pricing Structure: Compare the pricing of different providers. Some might offer pay-as-you-go pricing, while others might have monthly plans based on the number of messages. Consider any setup fees, monthly fees, and costs per message. Look for transparent pricing without hidden fees.

3. Ease of Use: The platform should be user-friendly, allowing you to easily create, send, and manage your campaigns. A good user interface and logical navigation are essential, especially if you will be sending messages frequently.

4. Features and Functionality: Depending on your needs, look for features like message scheduling, personalized messages, automated responses, and the ability to manage large contact lists. Advanced features might include segmentation, analytics, and integration with existing CRM or marketing automation tools.

5. Compliance and Security: Ensure the provider complies with all relevant data protection regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, or TCPA. Security features like data encryption and secure data handling practices are vital to protect sensitive information.

6. Customer Support: Reliable customer support is essential. Check if the provider offers comprehensive support through multiple channels like email, phone, or live chat. Quick response times and knowledgeable support can be very beneficial, especially during critical messaging campaigns.

7. Scalability: The chosen SMS provider should be able to scale with your business. Whether you need to increase the volume of messages or require more complex services, the provider should be able to accommodate your growing needs.

8. Integration Capabilities: If you're planning to integrate the SMS service with other software like a CRM system, email marketing platforms, or analytics tools, check the ease and available options for integration.

9. Trial and Testing: Many providers offer free trials or credits to test their platform. Utilize this to check the effectiveness of the platform in terms of ease of use, feature set, and delivery reliability.

10. Reputation and Reviews: Finally, research the provider’s reputation. Look for reviews, testimonials, and case studies from other users, especially those in your industry. This can provide valuable insights into the reliability and quality of service.

By evaluating these factors, you can find a bulk SMS sender that not only meets your current needs but also supports your communication strategies as they evolve.

How Does Bulk SMS Sender Pricing Work?

The pricing for bulk SMS services can vary widely based on several factors, including the provider, the volume of messages, the destination of the messages, and any additional features or services. Here are some typical pricing models you might encounter:

1. Pay-As-You-Go: This is a common pricing model where you pay for each SMS sent. Prices can range from fractions of a cent to several cents per SMS, depending on the country to which you are sending the message. This model is ideal for businesses that have varying SMS volumes and do not want to commit to a monthly fee.

2. Monthly Plans: Some providers offer monthly plans that include a set number of SMS messages. If you exceed the number included in your plan, you may be charged an additional fee per SMS. Monthly plans can be cost-effective for businesses with regular SMS sending needs.

3. Tiered Pricing: As the volume of SMS increases, the price per SMS often decreases. This tiered pricing is suitable for businesses that send large volumes of SMS messages regularly.

4. Setup Fees and Add-ons: Some services might charge a setup fee or fees for additional features like dedicated numbers, advanced analytics, or API access.

For example, prices in the United States can range from $0.01 to $0.05 per SMS for smaller volumes. For larger volumes, such as tens or hundreds of thousands of messages per month, the price per message can drop to below $0.01. International SMS prices can be higher and will vary greatly depending on the destination country.

It’s important to carefully consider your specific needs, such as how many messages you plan to send, to which countries, and whether you need any special features or integrations, to accurately compare pricing between different bulk SMS providers. Additionally, always check for hidden costs like setup fees or charges for incoming messages to get a clear understanding of the total cost.

Benefits of Using Bulk SMS

Whether you are alerting customers to a new offer, sending out urgent updates, or simply keeping your community informed, bulk SMS provides a reliable and cost-effective solution.

1. High Open Rate: SMS messages have a remarkably high open rate compared to emails. Most text messages are opened within minutes of receipt, ensuring that your communication is seen almost immediately.

2. Cost-Effective: Sending messages in bulk can be much cheaper than other forms of communication, such as direct mail or broadcast advertising.

3. Wide Reach: Nearly everyone has access to a mobile phone, which means you can reach a vast audience, including those without internet access.

4. Speed and Flexibility: Bulk SMS allows you to send messages to thousands of people at once, instantly. Moreover, it’s easy to customize messages for different segments of your audience for more targeted communication.

SMS gateway carriers like AT&T partner with SMS API providers like Twilio or Bandwidth to empower easy, affordable access to the benefits that bulk text messaging provides. Notably, these benefits work best when using a short code or Sender ID.

Best Practices and FAQs for Sending Bulk SMS

By following the outlined steps and best practices below, you can maximize the impact of your SMS campaigns and ensure they are as effective as possible.

1. Obtain Consent: Always ensure you have explicit consent from recipients before sending SMS messages. This not only complies with legal requirements but also builds trust with your audience. Enable them to opt-in to your messages and provide an unsubscribe option as well.

2. Personalize Messages: Use recipients' names and relevant information to make the SMS feel more personal and increase engagement.

3. Time Your Messages: Send messages at a time when recipients are more likely to read them. Avoid early mornings or late nights.

4. Keep It Simple and Clear: Since you have limited characters, make sure your message is straightforward and easy to understand.

5. Include a Call-to-Action: Encourage your recipients to take a specific action, such as visiting a website or calling a phone number. Be sure to be routing people to the proper place in your CTA.

By following the proper practices for bulk SMS sending, you can reap the maximum benefits from your sms marketing campaigns.

When our family bought an electric cargo bike earlier this year, one of my biggest fears was that this lovely and expensive new machine was going to get stolen. So I got the best lock money could buy, and I started to investigate: did I need ebike insurance?

First, I called my homeowners insurance provider to see if they would cover the bike if it were stolen. To my surprise, because it’s an electric bike, not only did my policy not cover it, they wouldn’t even add it for an additional fee or sell me a separate policy for it, the way they did for our family car.

Instead they referred me to an insurance company that specializes in bikes and ebikes. I bought a policy from them and sleep a little better for it.

I’ve heard similar stories from other ebike owners. And I’ve heard worse.

What can happen without ebike insurance

The saddest stories are the ones where someone assumed their homeowners or renters or car insurance covered their ebike, and after it was stolen or seriously damaged, it turned out it wasn’t covered.

"And then there are the stories about people whose ebikes were covered by their homeowners policy, but their premium went way up when they made a claim for a stolen ebike."
-Kyle Miller, CEO Brass Hands

Why it’s hard to insure an ebike

When it comes to insurance, ebikes land in a gray area outside standard homeowners insurance and auto insurance. Here’s why:

 • Ebikes are new in terms of the insurance industry. Most of the several million ebikes in the U.S. were purchased in the last two years. Insurers aren’t familiar with them, and insurers don’t like to be surprised by unfamiliar products.
 • Ebikes are more expensive than regular bikes. Policies that cover bikes, like most homeowners or renters policies, might have also covered ebikes until the insurer had to pay much larger claims than they expected to replace a damaged or stolen ebike. See above about insurers and surprise. So some policy terms got changed.
 • Finally, ebikes get stolen a lot, and not only from people’s homes. They are ridden and locked up outside all over the place, which makes them more vulnerable than other valuable household items.

Steps to take to properly insure your ebike

The odds that your ebike is covered by your existing insurance is lower than you may think. Here’s what to do to find out if you need ebike insurance:

 1. Call your insurance company and find out what they cover. Things to bring up: coverage of accidental damage, theft, and travel (like what would happen if you flew somewhere with your bike and the airline did a number on it). Does the insurance company consider your ebike a “luxury item”? If you’re happy with the coverage, great! You’re good to go.
 2. Consider bike-specific coverage. If you aren’t covered, or feel like the coverage you do have isn’t enough, here are some things to think about.

Bike insurance covers all kinds of bike specific things, not just theft. Think damage to the bike from a collision, medical payments if you are injured in a collision, insurance for the bike if you are traveling with it or racing it, or a bike rental while your bike is being repaired. Some policies even cover things like accessories (like bike lights and panniers) and riding clothes.

Bike claims won’t affect your other insurance premium. Should you need to make a claim on your ebike, your home insurance premium won’t change or get canceled.
